Mustang Island: Named One of '9 Beaches That Are Better in the Fall'

Coastal Living says autumn is the best time to come to Mustang Island, when Cinnamon Shore sees fewer crowds and warm weather well into the fall.

We weren’t surprised when the magazine put our lovely Mustang Island on its list of “9 Beaches That Are Better in the Fall.” That’s when the Texas sun shines with gentler rays. By October, average temps slip from a high of 78° to a low of  67°―perfect beach weather. Coastal Living highlights the cooler days and kayaking along Mustang Island State Park Paddling Trail.

Here's what Writer Andrew Nodell said about the island where Cinnamon Shore hosts vacationers:

"As the thermometer drops up north, this Gulf coast destination maintains a comfortable average temp in the mid-70s well into the fall. Grab a kayak and explore the calm waters of Corpus Christi Bay along the Mustang Island State Park Paddling Trail, which encompasses miles of the best bird watching and shallow-water fishing areas in Texas!"

Reasons to come to Cinnamon Shore this Fall

As summer gives way to autumn and the holiday season, you'll also start to enjoy:

  • off-season rates on our vacation rental homes, cottages, and condos.
  • greater availability among our many rental homes and condos.
  • the quieter charms of an island known for its scenic shoreline, hunting, fishing, and birding.

Port Aransas typically hosts Beachtoberfest from the end of September through October, with food and music festivals and fun capitalizing on the warm days and pleasant evenings. Cinnamon Shore books live music and offers family fun to complement all the Beachtoberfest fun.

Paddling the Island Trail

The Mustang Island State Park Paddling Trail touted in the Coastal Living article consists of the North Trail (8.5 miles), the Shamrock Loop Trail (5.24 miles) and the Ashum Trail (6.8 miles). Each trail hugs the western shoreline of Mustang Island in Corpus Christi Bay, offering access to  some of the best shallow-water fishing areas in Texas. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) web site says, "The Ashum Trail follows the shoreline of Corpus Christi Bay over a firm sand bottom and allows for outstanding bird watching as well as sight casting opportunities. The Shamrock Loop Trail skirts the beautiful, protected waters of Shamrock Cove, where it connects with the North Trail, which follows the shoreline to East Flats and then meanders through marsh and spoil islands to the Island Moorings Marina in Port Aransas."

Look for wading birds, shore birds, mottled ducks, and animals such as raccoons, armadillos, and rabbits as you paddle past the sand dunes. You'll spy spotted seatrout, redfish, black drum, flounder and more, if you want to try your hand at surf or wade fishing. Consult the TPWD site (tpwd.texas.gov) for more information on the kayak trail, including put-in and take-out points.
